Brunch on a snow day

It snowed 6 inches last night and school was closed today. I want to tell you how productive I was all day, but other than a good morning walk and another short one in the afternoon, I can’t think of a single productive thing I did.

I should have been cleaning out my closet.

Or cleaning the refrigerator.

Or dusting.

But instead, I finished the book I was reading, promising myself that I wasn’t going to cry. {Readers had told me that the book made them cry, so I was prepared.}

After my morning walk, I noticed that it was 10:30 a.m. and all I’d had to eat was nothing but a couple of cups of coffee.

So that’s why my stomach was growling.

I opened the frig, thinking I would make some eggs, some toast . . . and then I saw the lettuce I’d just bought yesterday and suddenly wanted some. So I made a bed of Artisan lettuce and added sliced English cucumber, hot house tomato wedges, avocado slices and sunflower seeds. Over the top, I sprinkled freshly grated sea salt and ground pepper and finally I added a dollop of Marie’s Italian dressing.

It was OMG yummy.

And I kept reading my book. There’s a lot of questions and just as many answers. And all in all, I liked the The Shack a lot.

And I did end up crying after all.

I served my lunch on my brand new placemats – a gift from fellow blogger Hilary, at Crazy as a Loom. {I love the name of her blog}. Aren’t these placemats beautiful? I was surprised to find that they were made from blue jeans! Check them out here:

Blue jean placemats

The great thing is that they’ll last a long time, sort of like my own blue jeans. Well, the ones that still fit, anyway. *snort *

And now, I feel that I must post the obligatory snow picture, although I know that so many of you are sick of it all about now.

I sat on the porch this afternoon, right by the red front door you see, reading my book in the sunshine, with George at my feet. No jacket needed, for the sun was wonderfully warm.

Tomorrow, it’s back to the real world after a 4-day weekend. Wish me luck.

Thanks for stopping by today, my friends ~

i'm glad you liked the book - i didn't really care for it that much. but i've been told by many that i'm in the minority.

but i do love your placemats. i guess i shouldn't brag too much that temperatures have been in the 80's here.

That salad really does look incredible.

I have the Shack and am about halfway through it. I should mention I've had the book for *almost 2 years* and I'm about halfway through it. Your endorsement gives me some much needed inspiration to keep going forward.

Hope your return to work is a smooth one.

i didn't read the shack....it didn't grab me right away, so back on the shelf it went.

i'm now reading shelter me....it did grab me and will keep me busy the rest of the week....well, along with a gazillion other things :)

OMG! I had found Hilary's site because of your post a while back about her giveaway - and I had seen where you had admired her placements. She's a dear to give them to you!!! They're wonderful. My dad made blue jean rag rugs and it always brings back memories...

Your day sounds pretty productive to me!! Your post reminded me to thank you for sharing the Crazy as a Loom site last year. I bought my niece and myself the loom for potholders and we have LOVED it. Those potholders last for YEARS!!!! Thanks.

We got what I call a dusting of snow. Enough to have it be very pretty. Snowed most of the day but melted. Tonight more is expected. Nothing likes yours though but still I had a snow day too.

Don't you just love days like that-so what if "stuff" doesn't get done. Trust me, it will still be there tomorrow (I have never once had the elves come during the night and take care of things). Love the placemats too--bluejeans, how interesting.

What a delicious looking breakfast, and I'm so glad you had the day off! I love the snow picture, and I can see the path where you trudged through on your walk. I also love those placemats, and how clever to make them from old blue jeans, people are so creative and resourceful!

Too far south here in VA to get that snow--but I wish we'd have gotten a little more to look at.

I think the salad looked wonderful--don't think I've ever had a salad for breakfast well, brunch!--but it looked and sounded really good. Of course, I've had cold Chinese food for breakfast--so don't go calling me boring.

Sounds like the perfect day! Gorgeous photos!

Kate your lunch looked divine!! You said it was boring compared to mine, are you sure you read the right blog before writing that??? Hahaha...
Gorgeous winter photo, as the Norwegians tell me around here, I can't complain about winter because this is how the weather is suppose to be right now...but in another month the gloves are coming off if this snow doesn't leave...How I'd give to have sunshine with the snow..we get it, but way to seldom..you're lucky, enjoy it my friend..

Wow, I am now going to fix myself a salad for dinner. Yum. Also sometimes you just have to sit and read a book, it is one of lifes necesities.

Look at you being so healthy! I swear 50% of the days I end up just eating a bagel with loads of cream cheese or nothing. It's nice when you find a good book, would you recommend the Shack?

PS - I love the focus on the photo of the placemat and I also love the colors in the photo of your house!

Say hi to George!

Hi Kate, sorry it's been a while. But still love to visit. And your pics as usual are stunning. About that book just saw the corner and NEW it was The Shack....God I cried my eyes out...longing to BE there....can't tell much more since you haven't finished it yet.

It's a beauty.

Your snow is beautiful. I'm ALMOST ready to miss snow again. Not quite.

I liked the Shack. Not the best book ever, but definitely a shift in conceptualization about God. A good shake up for a lot of people.

I just found you because I have been reading The Pioneer Women lately.
And now I will probably read you all the time too! I have never really
been a person to read blogs, but I am learning a lot through the process. She is on a ranch and you used to be on a thorougbred farm.
Two of my favorite things!

Yum! The salad!!!!! I read The Shack twice. Liked it even more the 2nd time around. Funny but my husband didn't think it was that great but he is super critical of books. Me not so very much. I love to read all kinds of books and he gets stuck in a rut.
